For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her

-------
by Paul Simon
from "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme"

Capo on 3rd Fret. Standard tuning. Originally played on a 12 string
in standard tuning (four low string pairs an octave apart, two high
pairs as drones...). Also, pay more attention to which strings you
need to hit rather than completing chord shapes for something like
Dadd9sus4. Paul Simon subscribes to the "Only fret what you need"
theory very strongly. This song is a good example of that. This, as
I pointed out, will sound good but different on a 6-string. When
played on a 12-string, the 3rd pair of strings (G open) becomes the
highest note and creates an unusual sound. Still, it is worth
learning since the fingering is the same for both. The chords are
listed at the end of the file.

I wandered...and so on...

What a dream I had
Pressed in Organdy
Clothed in Crinoline
Of Smokey Burgandy
Softer than the rain

I wandered empty streets down
Past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alleyways
As I walked on

And when you ran to me your
Cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand

(The bridge (is that what it is called?) is played on the same chords
except using D (normal) rather than Dadd9 and Dadd9sus4. To play it
just strum at the appropriate times and on the appropriate strings
(high if it's high, low if its low, etc...) At the end of the bridge
he does a 'run' as below...

The ending is played by strumming appropriately and picking
occasionally as follows:

C G D/F#add4
Oh how I love you------

When you go to the d/F#add4, pick as follows, using the pattern in
the first measure twice and the strum in the second measure as the
last note. This pattern starts as the last word "you" begins.

Addendum:

Someone posted "For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her" by Simon and
Garfunkel a few weeks back. I wanted to throw my two cents in,
but couldn't find the time until now.

When I learned the song, I didn't know about 12 strings, so I came
up with a way to make the intro sound right on a six string. Keep
your ring finger on the B string 5th fret and your middle finger on
the E string 3rd fret at all times. Then you only have to move the
pinky on and off the E string 5th fret and the index finger on and
off the G string 2nd fret. The thumb picks the D and G string notes.

Great tune!
Dave
