What, exactly, is a ROIO?

A ROIO is a Recording Of Illegitimate Origin. Such recordings are often referred to by a footwear-oriented b-word, but I frown upon that terminology. Boots are for your feet! Basically, a ROIO is a recording which isn't your typical record store fare.
